What is Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)?

Blood Alcohol Content, or BAC, is the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. A BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. It is the single number that most countries use to define legal impairment for driving, and it rises and falls in a fairly predictable pattern once you know how much alcohol was consumed, how much a person weighs, and how much time has passed.

  • •
BAC - how much alcohol is currently circulating in your blood.
  • •
Standard drink - a fixed unit (14 grams of pure alcohol in the US) used to compare different drinks fairly.
  • •
Elimination rate - the roughly constant speed (about 0.015% per hour) at which the average liver clears alcohol from the blood.

Standard formula used by this calculator

This calculator uses the Widmark formula, developed by Swedish physician and forensic scientist Erik Widmark in 1932 and still taught today as the standard reference method in toxicology and forensic science. It follows the elimination-rate range (0.015–0.017% per hour) and gender distribution constants documented by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and drink-size definitions published by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Widmark Mathematical Model
BAC (%) = [ (Alcohol consumed in grams) / (Body weight in grams × r) ] × 100 − (β × hours)
Where:
A
Alcohol Consumed
Alcohol consumed, in grams (standard drinks × 14g in the US).
W
Body Weight
Body weight, converted to grams (weight in kg × 1,000).
r
Widmark Distribution Factor
0.68 for men, 0.55 for women (accounts for the fact that alcohol distributes through body water, and women typically carry a higher body-fat percentage and lower body-water percentage than men of the same weight).
β
Elimination Rate
Metabolic clearance rate, ≈ 0.015% BAC per hour.
Sources: NIST Widmark factor documentation (nist.gov) and NIAAA standard drink definition (niaaa.nih.gov). This calculation is an educational estimate and cannot replace a calibrated breathalyzer or clinical blood test.

Worked example (step-by-step)

ステップごとの計算例

Using default inputs: Male, 75 kg, 3 standard drinks, 2 hours elapsed:

1
Alcohol consumed:3 drinks × 14g = 42g pure alcohol
Standard drinks converted to ethanol mass
2
Body weight in grams:75 × 1,000 = 75,000g
Metric weight conversion
3
Volume of distribution:75,000 × 0.68 (r for male) = 51,000g body water
Theoretical water distribution compartment
4
Raw (peak) BAC:(42 / 51,000) × 100 = 0.082%
Gross BAC before metabolic decay
5
Metabolised over time:0.015% × 2 hours = 0.030% eliminated
Zero-order enzymatic clearance
6
Net current BAC:0.082% − 0.030% = 0.052%
Active circulating blood alcohol level
Conclusion:This is above 0.05% (noticeable impairment) but below the 0.08% legal driving limit used in most U.S. states - still, driving is not advised at this level.

Why do two people at the same BAC feel so differently affected?

The Widmark formula gives an average estimate, not a medical measurement. Real BAC depends on things the formula cannot see: how much food was in the stomach, how fast the drinks were consumed, liver health, medication use, and genuine biological variation in the "r" distribution factor, which NIST research shows can range anywhere from about 0.51 to 0.85 in real people rather than sitting exactly at 0.68 or 0.55. That is why two people of identical weight and gender who drank the same amount can post noticeably different breathalyzer results - the formula is a starting point for awareness, not a substitute for an actual test.

よくある質問(FAQ)

Frequently asked questions about Blood Alcohol Content

How long does it take for BAC to reach zero?

On average, the human body clears alcohol at a constant rate of approximately 0.015% per hour. For example, a BAC of 0.08% takes roughly 5 to 6 hours to fully reach 0.00%. Cold showers, black coffee, vigorous exercise, or sleeping do not accelerate hepatic metabolism - only time allows the liver enzymes (primarily alcohol dehydrogenase) to oxidize circulating ethanol.

Does eating before drinking lower your BAC?

Eating before or while drinking slows the rate at which the pyloric sphincter releases alcohol into the small intestine, which delays and reduces your peak BAC. However, food does not neutralize or destroy alcohol - it simply flattens the absorption curve, meaning your liver still has to process the exact same total grams of ethanol over a longer duration.

Why do men and women get different BAC results from the same drinks?

The Widmark formula uses distinct distribution constants: r = 0.68 for males and r = 0.55 for females. On average, biological females have a higher percentage of adipose (fat) tissue and lower percentage of total body water than males of the same weight. Because alcohol dissolves only in water and not in fat, the identical dose of alcohol distributes into a smaller fluid volume in females, producing higher blood concentrations. Additionally, women generally have lower levels of first-pass gastric alcohol dehydrogenase.

Is a BAC calculator legally accurate?

No. A digital BAC calculator provides a theoretical educational estimate based on population averages. Actual individual blood alcohol levels depend on gastric emptying, hydration, genetics, metabolic rate, and medications. Certified evidential breathalyzers or laboratory blood tests are the only legally recognized methods to measure impairment. Never make a decision to drive based on an algorithmic estimate.
