Area & Perimeter Geometry Calculator (All Shapes)
Computes geometric planar surface area and boundary perimeter for Rectangles, Circles, Triangles, Squares, and Trapezoids.
How to calculate area and perimeter of a shape
Area tells you how much flat surface a shape covers, measured in square units (m², ft², cm²). Perimeter tells you the total length of its outer boundary, measured in linear units (m, ft, cm). One answers "how much space is inside," the other answers "how far around the edge" — two different numbers from the same shape.
Standard formulas used by this calculator (ISO 80000-2 notation)
This tool follows standard Euclidean plane-geometry formulas in line with international mathematical notation (ISO 80000-2) and the metric/customary unit tables published in NIST's official Handbook 44/133 — General Tables of Units of Measurement. These are the same formulas taught in school geometry and used on construction and engineering drawings worldwide.
Results are a pure geometric calculation from the numbers you enter. Real-world measuring (tape error, uneven surfaces, material waste allowance) can shift the practical figure — double-check critical measurements like flooring or fencing on site.
Variables: l/w = length & width (rectangle) · s = side (square) · r = radius (circle) · b/h = base and height (triangle/parallelogram) · a/b = parallel bases of trapezoid · L₁/W₁ = outer dimensions, L₂/W₂ = cutout dimensions of an L-shaped room.
How to calculate the area of a room in square feet — worked example
Suppose a room is 12 units long and 8 units wide (this calculator's default view):
Why does a bigger perimeter not always mean a bigger area?
It's tempting to assume more fencing means more land, but geometry doesn't work that way. Among all shapes sharing one fixed perimeter, a circle always encloses the most area — the isoperimetric inequality, and why round silos, manholes, and pipes are such efficient shapes. Among rectangles specifically, a square always beats every other rectangle at the same perimeter: a 10×10 square (perimeter 40) encloses 100 sq units, while a 15×5 rectangle with the identical perimeter of 40 encloses only 75. If you're fencing a plot and want to maximize usable land for a fixed length of fencing, shape choice matters as much as the numbers themselves.
Area and perimeter formula cheat sheet (quick reference table)
| Shape | Area Formula | Perimeter/Circumference Formula | Inputs Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | A = l × w | P = 2(l + w) | Length, Width |
| Square | A = s² | P = 4s | Side |
| Circle | A = πr² | C = 2πr | Radius or Diameter |
| Triangle | A = ½ × b × h or Heron's Formula | P = a + b + c | Base & Height OR 3 sides a, b, c |
| Trapezoid | A = ½ × (a + b) × h | P = a + b + c + d | Parallel bases a & b, Height h, Sides c & d |
| Parallelogram | A = b × h | P = 2(b + c) | Base b, height h, slanted side c |
| L-Shaped Room | A = (L₁ × W₁) − (L₂ × W₂) | P = 2(L₁ + W₁) | Outer Length/Width, Cutout Length/Width |

If your measurement is in a different unit than your supplier quotes in — say you measured in feet but they price per square meter — our unit converter handles that before you plug numbers in here. Frequently asked questions (real search queries)
Is the height of a triangle the same as one of its sides?
No. Height is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite vertex — not a slanted side's length. Using a slanted side gives the wrong area.
Why does circle area use π and rectangle area doesn't?
Because a circle has no straight sides to multiply — π is the fixed ratio between a circle's circumference and diameter, and it appears because a circle is the limit of a polygon with infinitely many tiny straight sides.
Do length and width need to be in the same unit?
Yes — always convert both to the same unit first. Mixing units is the most common source of area-calculation errors.
Can this calculator handle irregular or L-shaped rooms?
Yes! Simply select the 'L-Shaped Room' option. Enter the outer total length and width, along with the cutout dimensions. The calculator automatically subtracts the cutout and gives you both the net floor area and continuous outer perimeter.
How many square feet are in 1 Gaj (Square Yard)?
1 Gaj (Square Yard) equals exactly 9 square feet (sq ft) or approximately 0.8361 square meters (m²). It is the standard land and plot measurement unit used widely across India.
How do I calculate how many floor tiles I need for a room?
Divide the room's total square footage by the area of one tile (a standard 2×2 ft tile covers 4 sq ft), then add 10% for cuts and wastage. This calculator automatically displays this estimate in the materials card.
How to find length from area and width (reverse calculation)?
For a rectangle, length = Area ÷ width. For example, if a room is 96 sq ft and the width is 8 ft, the length is 96 ÷ 8 = 12 ft. For a circle, radius = √(Area ÷ π).
What's the difference between perimeter and circumference?
Same idea — total boundary length — but "circumference" is specific to circles, while "perimeter" is the general term for polygons.
